Future Mobility - How Sustainable is E-Mobility?

The project "eLCAr" deals with questions on life cycle assessment of electric vehicles, with the...

There is barely anyone who would deny that vehicles driven by electricity are more sustainable and eco-friendly that those which use fossil fuels. E-Mobility is already an important task for car producers, the fist charging station have been built. The more important it now seems to find answers to the question how eco-friendly this new type of mobility is indeed.
The project "eLCAr", supported by the European Commission, will provide guidelines and recommendations for LCA of electric vehicles. Togehter with the projects partners
,
and
the IFU Hamburg develops such guidelines on basis of the
and the specific requirements of the projects of the
.

ifu Hamburg calculates Carbon Footprint on behalf of EWE Energy

Carbon Footprint calculation of a roof construction by German company Holzbau Janssen.

According to the signs of the time the German company for woodwork "
" believes in the economic and ecologic advantages of sustainability. Thus, the carbon footprint of a roof construction has been calculated with the focus on possible improvements for the energy management.
The
initiated this project as they have enlarged their portfolio by several energy analysis services. The ifu Hamburg GmbH calculated the carbon footprint according to
and the more general guidelines of ISO 14040, ISO 14044 for Life Cycle Assessment.
The result demonstrates the ecologic advantage of wood as a building material. But furthermore it is proof for the measurements Holzbau Janssen had already implemented to improve its carbon balance, e. g. usage of climate neutral, eco-friendly electricity, before the current calculation was done.

Raw Materials Efficiency Award 2011 for Umberto Competence Center Braunschweig

Institute of Machine Tools and Production Engineering at the TU Braunschweig and the Fraunhofer IVV...

The German Federal Ministry of Economy and Technology and the German Raw Materials Agency awarded the IWF at the TU Braunschweig together with the Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging the Raw Materials Efficiency Award 2011. The award is granted to projects for more raw materials efficiency.
Both IWF and Fraunhofer IVV were awarded for developing a polymer lubricant that has the same lubricating effect as conventional, mineral oil based lubricants but less environmental impact. This has been proven by a comparative life cycle assessment, in which the software Umberto had been applied. The polymer lubricant is advantageous in terms of resource consumption and climate impact.
The product's marketability has been assessed by application in several industrial companies so that the Umberto Competence Center and the Fraunhofer IVV contributed to a more sustainable production.
IFU Hamburg congratulates on this success.

Young scientists research on electro mobility, solar energy and material flows

Prize winners of the Youth Informatics Award 2011 have now been selected!

At the EnviroInfo 2011 the winners of this year’s Youth Informatics Award have been honored last friday. For the 9th time the Technical Committee for Environmental Informatics of the German Society of Informatics e. V. awarded that price. The ifu Hamburg GmbH supported this promotion of young talents with the donation of the price money.
Driven by the necessity of environmentally friendly mobility the group focused the problem of limited range and long charging times of batteries in electric cars. The student’s solution of that challenge lies in an intelligent arrangement of battery exchange stations along the German road system. They developed a tool for calculating the optimum positions of those stations. Because of the clear project objectives and the straight solution this student work was awarded with the first place and 1.000 €.
The second place was taken by a student from the University of Bremen. She developed a Web-GIS based information service for solar energy for the city of Bremen. By analyzing and visualizing material flows within a production process of computer hardware two students from Berlin secured the third place.
